Translation and semiosis in semiosphere by Shuoyu Wu (2012,p1-18)

*   Keywords:
1.          According to Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Semiosis), semiosis is any form of activity, conduct, or process that involves signs, including the production of meaning. Briefly – semiosis is sign process. The term was introduced by Charles Sanders Peirce (1839–1914) to describe a process that interprets signs as referring to their objects, as described in his theory of sign relations, or semiotics.
2.          Semiosphere (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Semiosphere) is the sphere of semiosis in which sign processes operate in the set of all interconnected Umwelten (self-centered world). The concept was coined by Juri Lotman in 1982 and is now applied to many fields, including cultural semiotics generally, biosemiotics, zoosemiotics, geosemiotics, etc. The concept is treated more fully in the collection of Lotman's writings published in English under the title "Universe of the Mind: A Semiotic Theory of Culture"(1990).
*   This paper regards translation as a dynamic processes, bridging cultures due to gaps of their asymmetry, and thus it causes needs for intralingual and interlingual communication. I agree with both Jacobson and Wu about the fundamental property of translation is based on communicability (Wu, p2; p9). Under this essence, cross-cultures mapping occurs. Language itself functions not only as linguistic units to deliver meanings but the mechanism of transformation processes instead. In contrast to Jacobson, it seems that viewing translation as a passive perspective of homogenous transforms, meaning that the addresser and addressee are considered to be homogenous individuals, and the message itself is somewhat fixed. Wu’s discussion stems from Lotman’s point of view, a series of different functions within the semiosphere of the modeling system. Wu examines how translation generates as infinitum semiosis from two types of translation mechanism in the semiosphere: translation as restructuring and translation as explosion.

*   Couple questions to think about:
1.          Based on Wu’s assertion, supposedly C1 (culture 1), C2 (culture 2), C3…, etc. are diver cultures and every of them possesses their own sub-cultures such as C1-1, C1-2; C2-1, C2-2…, etc. Would the RT (response time) take longer due to the transparency of the boundaries of cultures particularly for those who are bilinguals or trilinguals?
2.          Based on Question 1, might the collective memory be enlarged due to the frequent interpretation of communication? However, might the cost of it be the fluctuation of self-identity and sense of belonging?

  1. 1.Based on Wu’s assertion, supposedly C1 (culture 1), C2 (culture 2), C3…, etc. are diver cultures and every of them possesses their own sub-cultures such as C1-1, C1-2; C2-1, C2-2…, etc. Would the RT (response time) take longer due to the transparency of the boundaries of cultures particularly for those who are bilinguals or trilinguals?

從1960 到1980 年代初期,洛德曼之論述重點落在「文化即訊息(culture as information)」、「文化即共同記憶(culture as collective memory pool)」以及「文化之詩學結構(structural poetics of culture)」等。

    2. Based on Question 1, might the collective memory be enlarged due to the frequent interpretation of communication? However, might the cost of it be the fluctuation of self-identity and sense of belonging?
